WOB StatsThe following are estimates for privately-held firms which are owned 50% or more by a woman or women. This data was gathered by the Center for Women’s Business Research and provides the most up-to-date information picture on privately-held women-owned businesses in Indiana.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census was used by the Center to project that, as of 2006, there are an estimated 196,685 privately-held, 50% or more women-owned businesses in Indiana. This accounts for 40.9% of all privately-held firms in the state, which is comprised of an estimated 87,487 privately held, equally (50-50) women- and men-owned firms and an estimated 133,708 privately-held, majority(51% or more) women-owned firms in Indiana.

50% Women-Owned Firms

  • There are an estimated 196, 685 privately held, equally (50-50) women- and men-owned firms in Indiana, which accounts for 40.9% of all privately-held firms in the state.
  • These firms generate nearly $29 billion in sales, ranking 16th in sales among the 50 states and Washington, D.C. The number of privately-held, equally (50%) women-owned employer firms in Indiana is estimated to be 25,137, employing 218,133 persons throughout the state.
  • Between 1997 and 2004, it is estimated that the number of these firms in Indiana increased by 4.6% while sales increased by 43.8% and employment grew by 14.1%. Indiana ranks 16th in the number of privately-held, equally (50-50) women- and men-owned firms in 2004.


Majority (51% or More) Women-Owned Firms

  • There are an estimated 133,708 privately-held, majority women-owned firms in Indiana, accounting for 31.3% of all privately-held firms in the state.
  • These firms generate nearly $18 billion in sales and employ 149,550 people.
  • It is estimated that, in 2004, there are 18,375 privately-held, majority (51% or more) womenowned employer firms in Indiana. The number of these firms grew by 26.4% from 1997 to 2004.
  • Among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., Indiana ranks 17th in the number of privately held, majority (51% or more) women-owned firms in 2004, 23rd in sales and 25th in employment.


Aggregate 50% or More Women-Owned Firms

  • In Indiana, more than half (51.8%) of privately-held businesses are majority or 50% women-owned. Among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., Indiana currently ranks 17th in the number and 29th in the growth of the number of privately-held, 50% or more women-owned firms between 1997 and 2004.
  • The 221,194 privately-held, 50% or more women-owned firms in Indiana generate more than $46 billion in revenues and employ 367,682 persons, ranking 18th in sales and 19th in employment as compared to the 50 states and Washington, D.C.
  • It is estimated that 43,513 of the 50% or more women-owned firms in Indiana are employer firms. Between 1997 and 2004, the Center for Women’s Business Research estimates that employment grew by 13.9% and the number of these firms grew by 14.6%.
  • Indiana ranks 36th in average overall growth of 50% or more women-owned firms.
